Adaptive Tops for Easier Dressing

Dress with comfort and dignity every day. Our adaptive tops feature side-opening and back-opening designs with Velcro or zip fastenings, no pulling over the head, no struggling with buttons, no overhead lifting. Suitable for men and women managing arthritis, post-surgery recovery, stroke, or limited mobility.

  • No Overhead Dressing

Back-opening and side-opening designs mean tops can be put on while seated, without raising arms above shoulder height.

  • Velcro & Zip Fastenings

Large, easy-grip Velcro tabs and zip pulls replace fiddly buttons, manageable with one hand or reduced grip strength.

  • Full Arm Opening

Side seams open completely to allow dressing around casts, dressings, IV lines, or braces without disturbing them.

  • Soft, Comfortable Fabrics

Lightweight, breathable materials that feel comfortable against sensitive or healing skin during long periods of wear.

Choosing an Adaptive Top: What to Look For

Standard clothing can become a daily challenge when arthritis, surgery, stroke, or limited mobility affect how you can move your arms and shoulders. The key features to look for in an adaptive top are the opening style (side or back), the fastening type (Velcro or zip), and whether the arm seam opens fully to accommodate dressings or casts.

Side-opening tops are best when one arm or shoulder needs to be protected or kept still. Back-opening tops are generally easier for carer-assisted dressing and for wheelchair users who spend long periods seated. Both styles avoid overhead dressing entirely.

Tops FAQs

Can these tops be put on without help from a carer?

Many of our customers wear these tops independently for the first time after switching from standard clothing. The side-opening and back-opening designs can be managed while seated, and the large Velcro or zip fastenings don't require fine motor control. Results depend on individual ability, if you're unsure, our team is happy to help you choose the most suitable style.

What is the difference between the side-opening and back-opening tops?

Side-opening tops unfasten along one side seam, making them ideal for dressing around casts, IV lines, or shoulder injuries while keeping the back of the garment intact. Back-opening tops fasten down the full back with Velcro or snaps, making them easier to put on from the front, often preferred for wheelchair users or those being dressed by a carer.

Are these suitable for someone recovering from shoulder or hip surgery?

Yes. Both styles avoid the need to raise arms overhead or twist the torso, which are the most painful movements after shoulder, hip, or abdominal surgery. The full arm opening on our side-opening tops is particularly useful for dressing around shoulder dressings or arm casts.

Do these look like regular clothing or obviously adaptive?

Our tops are designed to look as close to regular clothing as possible. The Velcro fastenings are positioned along the side seam or back where they are largely out of sight, and the overall silhouette is that of a standard long-sleeve or short-sleeve top.

Are they suitable for men and women?

Yes, all four tops in this collection are unisex in cut and sizing. They are designed to work comfortably for both men and women across a range of body shapes. Please refer to our size guide for measurements before ordering.
