Choosing Post-Surgery Clothing & Recovery Aids
The right products will depend on the type of surgery and which everyday movements are difficult during recovery.
- After hip or knee surgery: Side-opening or tear-away pants can reduce the need to bend or step into standard trousers. Adjustable footwear may also help if bending down to put on shoes is difficult.
- After shoulder or arm surgery: Front-opening bras and side-opening tops can make dressing easier when lifting or reaching with one arm is uncomfortable.
- After abdominal surgery: Soft, non-restrictive clothing and easy-access designs may be more comfortable around sensitive areas.
- For bathing and personal care: Long-handled brushes and other adaptive hygiene aids can reduce reaching and bending.
- For eating and drinking: Adaptive cups and easy-grip utensils can help when grip strength, coordination or upper-body movement is temporarily limited.
FAQs
What daily living aids can help after surgery?
Products such as long-handled bathing aids, adaptive cups, easy-grip utensils and dressing aids can help reduce bending, reaching or gripping during recovery.
What clothing can make dressing easier after hip or knee surgery?
Side-opening or tear-away pants can be helpful after hip or knee surgery when bending, lifting the leg or stepping into standard trousers is difficult. Full-opening designs can also make it easier to dress around swelling, bandages, braces or casts.
What products may help after shoulder surgery?
Front-opening bras, side-opening tops and other easy-fastening clothing can reduce the need to lift the arms overhead. Long-handled personal-care aids may also help with bathing and grooming.
Can your clothing fit over a cast or leg brace?
Yes. Our full side-opening pants and tops open completely along the seam, giving you full access to dress around a cast, brace, or wound dressing without disturbing it. The Velcro or zip closure then fastens neatly over the top.
My family member has a catheter bag after surgery. Do you have suitable pants?
Yes. We have adaptive pants with discreet internal and external pockets specifically designed to hold catheter bags securely and out of sight. These make daily movement, transfers, and outings much more comfortable and dignified during recovery.
Is adaptive clothing only useful during recovery, or can it be worn long term?
Many of our customers start with adaptive clothing during post-surgery recovery and continue wearing it long term because of how much easier it makes daily dressing. It's especially common among those who experience lasting mobility changes after surgery.
Can a carer dress someone in these garments easily?
Yes. Full-opening and side-opening designs can make assisted dressing easier by reducing the amount of pulling, lifting and repositioning needed. Velcro and zip closures also provide easier access when helping someone dress while seated or lying down.
