Understanding swollen feet & why fit matters

Swelling (also called oedema) happens when fluid builds up in the tissue of your feet and ankles, common with diabetes, poor circulation, heart or kidney conditions, prolonged sitting or standing, and simply as part of getting older.

It can change size throughout the day, which is exactly why standard shoes - built to one fixed shape, often stop fitting comfortably, sometimes painfully.

That's why everything in this collection is designed to adjust with you: wider openings, soft adjustable closures, so you can loosen or tighten the fit as your swelling changes throughout the day.

  • Adjusts as swelling changes

Fits comfortably whether your feet are at their usual size or more swollen than usual

  • Opens completely flat

Just place your foot in, no sliding or squeezing needed.

  • Non-slip sole

Grips securely on smooth or wet floors, helping prevent trips and falls.

A Real Customer Story

When Peter reached out about his mother-in-law's badly swollen feet, he sent us her measurements and a photo. We checked the fit against the slipper's adjustment range, and Peter and his wife made the trip to Eltham to pick them up. The slippers fit perfectly.

FAQs

What causes swollen feet, and when should I see a doctor?

Swollen feet (oedema) can come from a lot of things - diabetes, poor circulation, arthritis, prolonged standing or sitting, medication side effects, or simply changes that come with age. It's worth seeing your GP if swelling comes on suddenly, affects only one foot, or comes with pain, redness, or shortness of breath, as these can sometimes need prompt attention.

Will these fit severe swelling or bandaged feet?

Yes, our footwear is built with soft, adjustable closures rather than rigid laces, so the fit can loosen right out to accommodate significant swelling or bulky bandaging. The straps also let you adjust the girth throughout the day as your swelling changes, so you're never forced into one fixed shape. For reference, our most accommodating style, Owen's Oasis, opens up to 50cm around the foot and 20cm high, designed for very significant swelling.

I have one foot more swollen than the other. What size should I choose?

We recommend choosing the size that fits your larger or more swollen foot. Because our straps are fully adjustable, you can tighten the shoe on the smaller foot for a secure fit while leaving the other side looser for the swollen foot. This solves the common problem of having to buy two different sizes.

What should I look for in footwear if I have diabetes?

A few things make a real difference: a smooth, seam-free interior to avoid rubbing, adjustable (not rigid) closures, a non-slip sole for safety, and enough room to check your feet daily without a struggle getting shoes on and off. All of our footwear is designed with these in mind. We also recommend pairing them with our Diabetic Bamboo Socks for complete protection against blisters and moisture.

Can I wear these outdoors?

Yes. While they feel as soft as a slipper, they are built with durable, slip-resistant soles suitable for outdoor use. They are perfect for trips to the letterbox, the garden, or medical appointments, giving you stability without the weight of a heavy shoe.

Are these suitable for someone with limited grip or dexterity?

Yes, our adjustable straps use touch-fastening closures rather than laces or buckles, making them much easier to manage for anyone with reduced grip strength or dexterity.
